Why only these three
There are over 200 technical indicators. The uncomfortable truth: most correlate with each other. Mastering three well-chosen ones is far more useful than knowing twenty halfway. RSI, MACD and EMA cover the three essential axes: momentum, direction and price average.
EMA — Exponential Moving Average
An EMA is the average price over the last N periods, weighted toward recent values. On Bitcoin the most-used are EMA-21 (short), EMA-50 (mid) and EMA-200 (long / institutional).
Quick read: price above EMA-200 on the daily = macro bull. Below = macro bear. EMA-50 / EMA-200 crosses ("Golden" / "Death" Cross) are followed by institutional funds — self-fulfilling at scale.
RSI — Relative Strength Index
RSI measures recent price speed on a 0–100 scale. Convention: >70 overbought, <30 oversold. But in strong bulls RSI can sit at 80 for weeks. Selling on RSI alone in a bull exits you early.
Correct use: hunt divergences. Price makes a new high but RSI makes a lower high → trend weakening even while price rises. Bearish divergence on the weekly is one of the best cycle-top predictors on BTC.
MACD
MACD combines two EMAs (typically 12 & 26) and plots their difference against a signal line (9-EMA of that difference). Two lines + a histogram.
What matters: MACD line crossing above signal = bullish momentum; below = bearish. Histogram shows strength. Divergences with price are extremely powerful for spotting reversals.
Combining without clutter
Pro BTC setup: clean chart with EMA-21 and EMA-200 overlaid, RSI below, MACD below. Three layers, no more. More indicators = noise and "analysis paralysis".
Ideal long setup: price above EMA-200, pullback to EMA-21 without losing it, RSI exiting <40 upward, MACD crossing up. When the three align, statistical odds of continuation are high.
When indicators fail
Indicators are derivatives of price. They fail in two contexts: sudden news (regulation, hacks, ETFs) and extreme range-bound markets. Structural analysis (S/R, SMC) outperforms then.
That's why RE₿EL Academy combines classic TA with SMC at advanced levels, and the Market Simulator includes 4 scenarios where traditional indicators fail completely.
